Chartreux History 

The Carthusian order of monks from the French Valley of Chartreuse bears the same name as the Chartreux cat. According to the Chartreux Cat Club U.K., no hard evidence supports the legend that these cats were friends with the monks. The association was created because of the Chartreux's gentle gray coats and quiet disposition.

The Chartreux has documents from as far back as the 1700s. These cats were well-known for their superb hunting abilities and for keeping rats out of stables, stores, and homes. Unfortunately, furriers targeted them because of their stunning blue-gray fur. Until the early 1900s, Chartreux cats lived in freedom in packs and began appearing in European breed shows in the 1930s.

France no longer had wild Chartreux cats wandering around in packs by the end of World War II. Thankfully, early 20th-century breeders tried to conserve the Chartreux cat, although they are still comparatively uncommon today.

France honour’s the Chartreux as its National Cat. This breed is among the oldest naturally occurring cat breeds, possibly dating back to the early 1700s.

Jean-Baptiste Perronneau's 1747 painting "Magdaleine Pinceloup de la Grange" features a Chartreux cat in the subject's arms. This portrayal was highly unusual for the era.
